What Stump Grinding Actually Means

Stump grinding is the mechanical removal of a tree stump using a rotating cutter wheel. We grind down past ground level — 6 to 12 inches deep — so you can plant grass over it, build over it, or just stop staring at it. Stump grinding is different from stump removal (which involves digging out the entire root ball with an excavator). Grinding is faster, cheaper, and works for almost every situation unless you're putting a building foundation right where the stump was.

When You Need Stump Grinding

If you're seeing any of these signs, it's time to call:

How We Do Stump Grinding

  1. Step 1: Locate utilities. Before we grind, we make sure no buried lines run through the stump zone. Iowa One Call (811) covers most of it. We don't grind blind.
  2. Step 2: Position the grinder. Self-propelled stump grinder gets walked or driven into position. Tight spots, narrow gates — we have a smaller machine that fits through 36-inch gates.
  3. Step 3: Set depth and grind. Cutter wheel chews through the stump in passes. We go 6-12 inches below grade, depending on what you'll do with the spot. Replanting grass = 6-8 inches. Building over = 12+ inches.
  4. Step 4: Surface roots. If there are surface roots running out from the stump that bother you, we can grind those out too. Just tell us when we quote.
  5. Step 5: Cleanup. Chips can be left for backfill (free dirt) or hauled away. Default: we leave the chip pile for backfill, then haul it if you don't want it. Your call.

What Stump Grinding Costs

$150-$400 typical

Most residential stump grinding jobs in the Dubuque area cost $150 to $400 per stump. Small stumps (under 12 inch diameter) start around $100-$150. Big oak or maple stumps over 30 inches can run $300-$500. Multi-stump discounts when we're already on-site.

What changes the price:

Estimates are always free. We come look, walk you through what it takes, and give you a real number. No pressure.

How Long It Takes

Single small stump: 30-60 minutes. Single large stump: 1-2 hours. A yard full of stumps from a recent removal: half a day. We can usually grind same-day for small jobs.

What's Left After

Stump zone is ground out and either filled with chips (free, fast) or filled with topsoil (we charge for the soil if you want it). Yard cleaned, no big chip piles unless you want them. You can plant grass over the spot in a few weeks once chips settle.

Frequently Asked: Stump Grinding

How deep do you grind?

Standard depth is 6-8 inches below grade — enough to plant grass over. If you're going to build something or hardscape, we go 12+ inches. Tell us what's going there and we'll grind it right.

Will the roots eventually rot away?

Yes, but slowly — usually 5-10 years for major roots. If you're planting grass or a small garden, the remaining roots underground won't bother you. If you're building over the spot, we go deeper or recommend full root excavation.

Can the stump grow back?

Some species (silver maple, willow, cottonwood, locust) will keep sending up shoots from leftover roots even after grinding. If yours is one of those, we can apply a stump killer to the freshly-ground surface before we leave.

Do you grind on rocky or rooty ground?

Yes, but it's slower — rocks dull the cutter teeth. We charge a little more for rocky soil because tooth wear is a real cost. We tell you upfront if your yard is going to be a tooth-eater.

Do you haul the chips?

Default is we leave chips for backfill (it's basically free dirt that breaks down into soil). If you want them hauled, that's an extra charge — usually $50-$100 depending on volume.

Can you grind a stump if the tree was removed by someone else?

Yes. Stump grinding is its own service. You don't need to have used us for the removal. We grind plenty of stumps from other companies' jobs.
