Hazard limbs, structure pruning, clearance work, dead wooding. We trim trees the way they're supposed to be trimmed — keeping them healthy, not topping them.
Tree trimming (also called pruning) is the controlled removal of specific limbs to keep a tree healthy, safe, and shaped right. It's not the same as tree removal — we're keeping the tree, just cutting what doesn't belong. Done right, trimming makes trees stronger, reduces storm damage risk, and keeps limbs off your roof and power lines. Done wrong (think: "topping") it kills trees over a few years. We follow proper ISA pruning standards on every cut.
If you're seeing any of these signs, it's time to call:

$300-$1,500 typical
Most residential tree trimming jobs in the Dubuque area run $300 to $1,500. A single hazard limb might be $200-$400. A full crown clean on a mature oak can be $800-$1,500. Multi-tree pruning work scales accordingly.
Estimates are always free. We come look, walk you through what it takes, and give you a real number. No pressure.
Most trimming jobs are a half day or less. Multi-tree or whole-yard pruning work runs a full day or two. Single hazard-limb removals can be done in a couple hours.
Brush gone, lawn raked, work zone blown out, no leftover sawdust piles. The tree should look balanced — not bald, not lopsided. If you want sawdust or chips left behind for mulch, just say so when we quote.
Late winter (February-March) or late summer for most species. Trees are dormant or near it, so cuts heal cleanly and there's no leaf load to deal with. Hazard limbs and storm damage we'll handle any time of year — safety doesn't wait for the calendar.
Trimming cuts specific limbs at proper points to keep the tree healthy. Topping is just hacking the top off a tree. Topping kills trees over 3-5 years, makes the regrowth structurally weak, and is considered malpractice in the tree care industry. We don't do it.
Mature trees usually need a real prune every 3-5 years. Younger trees benefit from light structural pruning every 1-2 years to set them up right. If you've got hazard limbs over the house, those don't wait — call when you see them.
Not when it's done right. Proper pruning makes trees healthier and safer. Bad pruning (topping, flush cuts, removing too much) absolutely can hurt a tree. We follow ISA standards on every cut.
Yes. Oaks are some of our most common trim work. Important note: oaks are best pruned in winter or late summer to avoid oak wilt — a fungal disease that spreads when oaks are cut during sap flow. We follow that timing rule unless it's an emergency.
Yes — we have the equipment and training for it. If the limb is touching the power line directly, you'll need to call your utility first to drop power. We'll coordinate timing with you.
